Since 2013 Olaf Schmidt is Ballet Director at Theater Lüneburg.
Every season he creates three new productions in Lüneburg, which are performed with extraordinary success by his own company of ten dancers.
Olaf Schmidt started his dance education in Berlin where he was born.
He took contemporary classes in London and New York and danced as soloist in the companies of the State Theaters of Bremen, Ulm, Mannheim (Germany) and Bern (Switzerland); he danced with “Lisa Torun Company” (London) at “The Place”, with “Ludica Danca” and with CIA 2 of Balé da Cidade Sao Paulo (Brazil).
His first choreographies „Gesänge des Albatros“(1989) and “The Blue Glasses” (1991) were very successful and he became Ballet Director in Kaiserslautern from 1992-97 where he created amongst others a new “Nutcracker” and “Bolero”.
Afterwards he had the same position at the Badische Staatstheater Karlsruhe (1998-2000). The 36 members of the company performed in a neo classical style amongst others his first production of “Swanlake” and “Petrushka”.
Later on he worked for 4 years as freelance dancer, teacher and choreographer in Brazil, London, Germany and Spain as well as performing the M.C in Cabaret.
From 2004 until 2012 he took the Direction of Ballett Regensburg (Germany), where he created modern versions of “A Midsummernightsdream”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “Romeo and Julia” and “Mozart - Requiem”.
As a guest choreographer he worked for the Guangdong Modern Dance Company (China), am Teatro Amazonas in Manaus (Brasilien), at Ballet de Zaragoza (Spanien), bei den IMPERFECT Dancern (Italien), an der CIA. Sociedade Masculina and at Bale da Cidade in Sao Paulo(Brazil). 2016 he created a new “Carmen” for the CINEVOX JUNIOR COMPANY(Switzerland).
Since 2006/2007 he is directing as well musical theatre such as "Brigadoon" , Alban Bergs "Wozzeck" , "Die Lustige Witwe"(Lehar), "Cabaret", "Im weißen Rössl" and in autumn 2017 "Sugar - some like it hot".
